She isn’t looking back over her shoulder
not peering back into what it was she left behind
his wreckage smoldering on the roadside in Georgia
mid-day sun baking the flesh off his bones as she departs
not a cloud in sight to break the scornful heats blaze
it’s the days like this one that turn your hide to leather
make every wound feel a little bit more distant
and the cliffs you fall from really don’t seem so high
when a blade won’t pierce your skin a whisper can
here he is and he isn’t going to go after
just let the vultures pick apart his burdened skin
she is burning every bridge just as fast as she cross them
leaving all the empty promises and days she can’t get back
leaving him and all the nights he penetrated into her
into her body and more so into her now burnt out soul
maybe now that she is walking by her lonesome
she can stop to look around and maybe catch a sunrise
yeah you know because she only likes to sleep sometimes
mostly you can find her sitting on her balcony smoking cigarettes
and sipping at a very much too full glass of red red wine
yeah yeah she does it by herself these days
there isn’t nobody worth spending time on anymore
and when she closes her big brown eyes
she can picture oh so vividly his wreckage burning in Georgia
and it puts a sly smirking smile on her face
her friends told her that this would be the hardest part
all these nights that she would spend so so so apart
but she has got her hide turned right into leather
and it doesn’t hurt to her to wake up hung over
even when she’s got full knowledge that she drank alone
so she licks her wounds and she combs her long black hair
finds the keys to her car and doesn’t worry about what to wear
just pushes that pedal on the right until it hits the floor
maybe now that she is walking by her lonesome
she can stop to look around and maybe catch a sunrise
yeah you know because she only likes to sleep sometimes
mostly you can find her sitting on her balcony smoking cigarettes
and sipping at a very much too full glass of red red wine
yeah yeah she does it by herself these days
yeah you know she does it by herself these days
yes she does it by herself
yes she does it by herself
yes she does it
yes she does it
yes she does
yes she does…….
