living in fear

the girl sits alone in a quite room
rocking slowly back and forth in the rocking chair

she sits alone, afraid...
afraid of life...
afraid of people...
afraid of herself...
afraid of death...
afraid of what could lie on the other side of the door...

her fear eats her body from the inside out
her spirits are crushed
her very soul lies in fear

she is afraid of what people will think of her
she’s too fat, too skinny, too ugly, stupid, fake
she feels as though she can not win against the world and their media
her mind is tainted by the images on TV of people that are not real

she is afraid of the violence
she turns on the news only to find another murder
she believes what they say
believes that people only die
that no one is ever born
people are only killed
they never live
she buys into their lies
she locks her doors at night afraid from what she sees

another murder they say, on the loose again
another negro male he could be at your house next
so lock your doors and windows and hope he doesn't come
he doesn't say that he is two states away
or that he has never killed anyone
but she buys it still buys lies and lies

she is afraid of herself
what she can do and what she can not

and so she sits alone
living in fear
her own fear which she has sewn
