I thought I saw you
yesterday in the park
you were pushing a child
higher and higher towards the sky
I didn’t know swings could get so high
all I can hear is a soft giggle
sweet innocent laughter
filling the sunny warm air
sun shines and you are one
mother and child
entering the gates
I sit on the bench
absorbing all the energy
another child squeals with delight
you turn
our eyes connect, locking
I was not meant to see you
the air gets cold
sun hides
as the dark spreads, thunder
cringing our eyes unlock
I blink
then look again
and you are gone
no child
just cold steel chains
swinging
the memories of what could
have been
