I sometimes kiss my cat at night
before I go to sleep.
I wish that she could talk or sing,
but she doesn't make a peep.

I wish that she could understand
things I reveal to her,
but she gazes up with empty eyes,
and then proceeds to purr.

I get angry at my dear cat
for purring while I cry,
her seeming pleasure in my pain
only causes me to sigh.

I must acknowledge a plain fact,
she cares not that I weep.
So it's time that I resign,
and mourn while we're asleep.
