more than enough

She smiles and she laughs
Something’s wrong
There’s a creased page in the book
But now she’s drinking from the river of peace
Washing her hands of every wrong for the first time in a couple years

She’s escaped the prison
The one they locked her in for those two long years
The prison where everything she did was a failure
No matter how much effort she put forth
Or how hard she tried, how long she cried
How hard or how many punches she threw

She let down her hair
And out fell the depression they forced onto her
Out fell every time she ran from her father
Her face cupped in her hands
And out poured her tears
She forgot the places she hid
All the dark secluded corners
Now that she’d forgotten them
She believed that this must be her safe place
There lying in bed next to him

She got a gentle nudge in the mornings
A loving smile and a goodbye kiss
She wasn’t afraid of him
He was the first man in her life that she didn’t feel she had to run from

He said, come along take my hand
Skip and dance and sing way too loud
Laugh for way too long

You’ve become my necessity
A need for me to go on living
He kneels in front of her, wiping her tears
“ You’re like a butterfly to me”
Beautiful, gorgeous when she spreads her wings
I love to watch her fly
Achieving a dream with each flutter of her wings

He told her that someday he’d make it okay
When they grew up and ran away
They’d push the world aside
And brush the problems off their shoulders

All he had to offer her was his hole hearted love
No diamond ring, not a house, not a lot of money
He asked her if it was enough,

She lifted his chin
Pulling his eyes from the floor
She wiped his one tear
Said that it was more than enough
She could never ask for more
