Angel Wings

May I shed my angel wings?
My halo is getting too heavy.
I know that people need me,
But this task is far too daunting;
Their words hang heavy on my heart.

May I shed my angel wings?
Their cries grow too loud to bear,
I took their pain as my own.
Their anguish now mine to bear.
I gave all I had to give - it wasn’t enough.

May I shed my angel wings?
Each has a new horror to speak of
But the sorrow remains, unceasing.
No matter how many are saved,
There are always more.

May I shed my angel wings?
I’m falling now, a downward tumble
From which none return.
I only hope that I have helped
And earned these angel wings to ease the fall.
