For Your Birthday by Annie Malamet

If you would be with me
i would buy you friday
and all its graces.
The laughter of children
and parties
and movie dates
would be the patterning on the wrapping paper.
But I can't buy friday.

If you would be with me
I would buy you color
and paint you in hues that suit you.
The bright colors that express joy
and the black sorrow
and the emotion, taste, and sound induced by them
would be the perfect gift to give you.
But I can't buy color.

But if you could love me
I could give you myself
and with all my faults and all.
The dreams and memories
the tears
the tenderness
compassion
fear
fragileness
loving grace
would be what I could give you...
but you didn't want that for your birthday.
