Coming to America

I sailed to Ellis Island from France,
Looking for a better life and romance.
The trip was long, tiring, and sometimes I cried,
There was little food, no fresh air, and people died.
We drank our water out of a single cup,
Sang songs to keep our spirits up.
We got to the U.S and I walked off the ship,
I was thankful to have had a safe trip.
Then a doctor checked me for diseases and lice,
And my name they changed, not once but twice.
It wasn’t easy getting a job and a place to stay
Found work taking care of children all day.
And lived in a small room above a grocery store,
I knew a little English and then I learned more.
I live in a community with all mixtures of people
There is a bar next to a church with a steeple.
The French, and Italians, the Germans and Poles
Work and live together, all with common goals.
I get up each day with hope in my heart
Glad to be in America to make my new start.
