Through so many tears we Americans shed,
Through the power of Civil Rights Act,
Through the troubled times our ancestors had
They left us with a few key facts.
First, intolerance was there,
Second, whoever had colored skin,
Were pushed through here and there,
Third, our country is stronger than it ever been.
During the years of 1700s,
Came the black people bound in chains,
To the American colonies,
They were too scared to complain.
They settled in the white farms,
With a crust of bread and a corner to sleep in,
All day long they worked hard, or stay in high alarm,
They had a minute to smile and an hour to weep in.
A slave was considered “three-fifths” of a person,
Their pint of joy to a peak of trouble,
Secretly planning an action,
Still, never a laugh but the moans come double.
Even after the Civil War,
After so many tears and so many fears,
The bar between whites and blacks were there,
The Civil Rights Act appears.
They tried to improve the African-Americans lives,
And other minority rights,
They plan on strides,
And free themselves they might.
Escaping to the north,
Refusing to let a white man pass,
Therefore the troubles were there,
They were being punished and harassed.
Under the President Lyndon B. Johnson,
The blacks were mostly freed,
They are no longer beaten,
Their hearts no longer bleed.
The United States of America is finally real,
Opened the door to further progress,
The colored are no longer awful,
They had better access.
We are moving on to victory,
With hope and dignity.
We shall all stand together,
Till everyone is free.
We know love is the watchword,
For peace and liberty.
Blacks and white, all our brothers,
To live in harmony.
All persons held as slaves…shall be…forever free.
