Standing there in line
Not knowing what to do
The toy my son wanted
Was getting few and few.
I saw the lil boy at the counter
With red shoes at the register
He was counting out his pennies
Smiling ear to ear.
Then his smile turned to sadness
I saw a silent tear role down his cheek
He put the money in his pocket
And quietly walked away.
I asked him what was wrong
And he told me…
“Ms, my mommy has been sick quite a while,
And all she wanted was some red shoes,
So, I saved my money,
And thought on Christmas day
I’d make her very happy
But, I was wrong
I’m $5 short
And now
I just don’t know what to do.”
With my heart breaking
I could feel his pain
Tears silently consumed my cheeks
I felt in my pocket
Pulled out the money I had brought with me for Sam
And I gave him the money he needed.
“Golly, Ms.
Thanks” he said
I saw his frown turn upside down
And he ran to the counter.
He ran back to me
Gave me the most warmest gentle hug
And thanked me once again.
He said
“You know
the doctor said my mommy would probably go on tonite
But, I knew she’d be happy
If she got her shoes
And now,
She can have them.
I asked the kid his name
And he replied
“Marvin Stocks
You may know my name by sweeper boy
Because for the last past month or so,
I’ve been working so I could get mommy her shoes.”
With that
He ran out the door
And I felt touched
Like never before.
That night
I prayed to the Lord
“Please, look over his family
He deserves a great Christmas.”
The next morning
As I fetched my paper
And sat down to read it
I saw…
“Susan Stocks, died Christmas night of cancer. Son walked in with her
Christmas present, and found her deceased.”
Oh, how my heart ached
I just wish I could hold him.
Just then…
My phone rang
I jumped up to answer it.
“Ms. Thank you for your money
Mommy never got to enjoy her shoes
But, I just want you to know
She would have loved them
And, I love you
