A Hell of a War

We arrive into town,
all thoughts rush through my head.
Will I kill anyone?
Will I be alive...or dead?

I pray to God,
for my comrads and I.
That on this day,
We'll all come out alive.

My buddy sitting next to me,
his hands shaking, as are mine.
We're about to do what we've trained for,
it's only a matter of time.

Our Humvee has stopped,
and we run out of the car.
The 50 calibur covering us,
as we start traveling afar.

Gunshots snap everywhere,
and all Hell breaks loose.
My buddies blood spills before me,
and our good memories educe.

His face turns pale,
and he fades away from the Earth.
He gave it all he had,
and all that he was worth.

I'll take revenge on what happened,
and I'll never let go.
The man who killed my friend,
will soon be filled with ammo.

My nerves calm down,
but my adrenaline goes up.
I'll make sure the man dies,
and isn't just locked up.

I've got him in my sites,
without thinking, I take aim and fire.
He drops dead to the ground,
and I go and cross the barbwire.

He's dead alright,
I just killed a man.
I couldn't believe what I'd done,
I'd just killed an Afghan.

I sat there and thought,
about what I'd just committed.
I'd taken a man's life,
and I could not omit it.

I pulled out my book,
of thoughts and journals.
About my life,
and all of its hurdles.

There is a picture of my wife,
and I look to her to inspire.
I promised I'd be coming home,
and i won't let that promise expire.

That night we won the battle,
but I sobbed over my lose.
I looked to God to carry me through,
and kissed my necklace with a cross.

They said they're shipping me out tomorrow,
and I'm going home to my sweet baby again.
I haven't seen her for months,
but I know she'll love me 'til the end.

She was standing at thte door,
when I came home that day.
She hugged me and she kissed me,
almost exactly the same way.

The next week was my buddy's funeral,
and I had to pay my respects.
They laid an American flag on his casket,
as I saluted and a tear rolled down my neck.

I put flowers on his grave,
and thought about what we'd gone through.
That was a hell of a war we'd fought,
and I'm glad I fought it with you.
