And there you were
Sitting alone
Her memory all a blur
Tracing each number on the telephone

You dialed the numbers
Putting the phone to your ear
You were left to bathe in the silence
Her gentle voice wasn’t there for you to hear

You wanted to tell her who was born last night
His baby blue eyes,
And tiny strands of black hair
Wanted to tell her all about her new grandson
I just wanted her to teach me again to have some fun

I forget to pick my head up some days
Need her to teach me to laugh again
Wanting and waiting for her to lift me from this haze

I still feel her limp hand
Her head thrown back
I can still see her eyes forced shut
Her skin coarse as sand

I remember crying beside her
Asking her to please stay
Don’t leave me yet grandma
I’m too scared,
I’ll speak every word you want me to say

I put my head in her palm
Asked why it was he had chosen her to take away
He told me her heart was broken into too many pieces
She was the kind of woman you could not replace

And I wanna be just as you
I want my eyes closed to the world
I wanna be the woman that’s true
I want to hold in
Every time I want to cry
I wanna be able to wipe the pain off my cheek
No one will ever see tears escape my eye
