Every cot I pass
Every soldier I see
Is one less person with their family
Mothers and daughters
Fathers and sons
Toting battle gear and loaded guns
Eating crummy food
And scrounging for water
With each sunrise, he days get hotter.
Missing the Carolinas
Or wherever they are from
Looking back at just how far we’ve come
Not recognizing ourselves
Or the loved ones back home
Surrounded by tons of people but feeling so alone
Trying to remember
The lives we’re here to save
And honoring the lives those before us gave
Receiving boxes and letters
When others get nothing
Sharing what you have because you are so loving
When it’s time to leave this place
And go home to the ones we love
Remember its America we fight for and our gracious God above
