Sweet, Ruthless Denial

Let's pretend that we never said those words..
Let's act like it was all just a joke.
A trick played on me,
When you smashed my heart into pieces.

And instead of holding her hand,
You'll be holding mine..
Like the old days,
The days I wish we still had.

But it was all just a joke, right?
You didn't mean it when you said those things..
I crossed my fingers when I told you that,
And my pillow wasn't soaked,
When I got done crying that night.

Don't take this denial from me,
It's all I've got left.

But it was just a trick, right?
Something to make me think for a second..
Something that never happened.

Please let me have that,
Don't ruin this for me.

I've had it for so long..
I wouldn't need it, though,
If you wouldn't have made me cry in the first place,
Or smiled at her instead.

Yeah, this is sweet denial..
It's just what I need.
