wait
is that you
playing those show tunes
dipping ink loaded flowers into your
shirt pocket
flashbulbs erupting
as you step onto the torn red carpet
that has known so many deaths

you will rise and fall with the worst of them
and im sorry for this sudden questioning
but youve taken up the shorthand
and its out of your character
to take such comfort in strobe lights

and i want to depend on someone else
someone who drips of chrome flowers and clay stars

youre acting so
strange
stranger then the strange youve copyrighted as your own
youre now spewing smiles and lead laced diamonds
in exchange for this
this
this thing that is not you
and i refuse to respond to that
to what you have become
to what youve exchanged for this torn red carpet
that has known too many deaths
