A Nightmare From Which You Cannot Wake

Close your eyes,
Slip away into a dream,
Where you can pretend that none of this is real,
And maybe tomorrow when you wake up,
You’ll find everything exactly the way it’s supposed to be.
Just close those beautiful eyes of yours, darling,
Let the night cover you in its soft blanket
And wash away the pain.
Pride always got the best of you,
But you always got the best of me.
Close them tight, my love,
And watch reality fade from existence,
Like grains of sand falling through the hourglass—
Piece by piece,
Drop by drop.
All the promises you never meant to keep
Now seem so unimportant.
Close them well—you always did.
Turn a blind eye to all the things
Too flawed to grace your line of vision.
So I guess this must be it—
The ever-tragic end.
I hope you can at least say you’re happy,
Without knowing it’s a lie.
Just say it one last time, for me,
And make it sound like you believe it—
You know it’s all that I could ask for.
