Mommy's voice cuts through the
music
I close my eyes tight and keep
singing
Trying to keep out the pain and
anger
I hear her again and stop the tape
Daddy's bass voice penetrates the
room
Like the footsteps of the t-rex when
you've no place to hide
I cringe as I hear his words
He's yelling at mommy again
She doesn't fight back, not a word
I can imagine the scene in my head
Having been through it many times
"If you lost some weight, maybe you
could get a better job instead
of getting turned down all the
time"
He says it like he's teaching a
school lesson
No cares about anyone's feelings
Never taking his hateful eyes from
you
I know mommy's sitting in the chair
Her jaw clenched tight to stop the
tears
She will not cry, it only makes him
angrier
Nor will she leave the room
He'll make her return
I fight the urge to throw open the
door and scream my hatred
at him
He doesn't understand how much
he hurts us
I hear mommy struggle to defend
herself
Then quiet as he begins yelling
again
I turn the radio back on
This time I do not sing
I pray for mommy to have strength
Don't let his words cut too deep
And I cry mommy's tears for her
