The Memories They Linger Here

The memories they linger here.
I can still feel the way your lips brushed against mine.
The sound of your heartbeat
As I matched mine to yours,
And the rise and fall of your chest;
The sigh in your breath.
I can still feel your arms wrapped so tight around me,
Holding me close,
The only time I ever felt safe.
I remember the way the sun smiled
The day we watched it rise,
Or the twinkling of the stars
The night we listened to their stories
And made up our own,
For the two of us;
A story with no ending.
For didn’t we hear once
Someone say
That fairy tales are a lie.
There is no happy ending,
For true love will never end.
My heart beat so quickly
That night I heard the stars sing
And dreamed my own story
For the two of us
With no end.
Dreamed and whispered
While the stars twinkled kindly
And the night bathed us in moonbeams
And listened as I told my story,
Or didn’t.
I remember how you drew your arms around me
When I began to shiver.
You thought that I was cold;
But I was afraid.
Afraid that our stories were not the same,
For I knew you still loved her,
Though I did not know how
You could love us both.
I tried once
To love two at once;
But I remember every time you looked up at me,
And the delicious chill that ran through my body
When you kissed me.
How you drew me close to you,
Pressed against your heart.
I felt your breath
And heard your heartbeat,
And I found myself lost again in your eyes.
With your arms around me,
I never loved the other more.
I can still feel the coolness of that night.
The way I shivered in the cold
And you warmed me with your presence.
And I trembled beyond the chill,
For I was afraid.
That your story would not be like mine.
