She saw her reflection
In the full-length mirror by the door,
And thought,
"What happened to me?
What happened to my youth?"
She stepped out into the world,
Hair pulled back into
A tight grey chignon,
And laid flowers on her husband's grave.
"Where are you now?"
She thought aloud,
"Can you hear me anymore?
I have sinned, and I have failed,
And now my heart is poisoned black.
I know that you can hear me now.
I know that you're disappointed.
But fifty years, and thirty alone,
Leaves a woman cold and bitter."
She turned to leave,
And walk away,
As a voice whispered her name.
"Is that you?"
She whispered back.
"I have heard you,
I have seen.
And I AM disappointed.
I thought that you would carry on,
And LIVE when I had DIED."
The voice faded then,
And she turned again,
And made her way back home.
She looked into the full-length mirror,
That stood beside the door.
She saw a reaper with a scythe,
And she was alone no more.
