Battling the battle every day
Just to look in the mirror
And see his bitter-sweet dismay.

They had a football game
At 7 that night
Coach told him he couldnt play
He was just too weak
So, on the sidelines he always sat.

Play after play
Huddle after huddle
Tackle after tackle
Touchdown after touchdown
He remembered his favorite days.

He would always go home in tears
And at school
He couldn't even face the teachers.

He begged and begged his mom
To please let him be home schooled
He couldn't take the laughter he got at school.

Mrs. Smith payed many visits to Elwood High
But, only made matters worse
For when Erick went back to school.

His mother tried to find him help
She searched and searched
She found a doctor miles away
And decided to take the chance.

The doctor said there wasn't much he could do
But, Erick was so tired of coming home each day
And soaking his shirt with tears as he looked in the mirror.

He was was sick of being picked on now
He was supposed to be the homecoming king.

He was just supposed to have the doctor tell him he was okay
He was supposed to live an ordinary life
But, cancer decided differently.

June 23, 1986 Erick silently went to sleep
On his bed, tears staining his cheeks.
