He lies there
His arms out stretched
Almost embracing his impending death
He feels the heroin move through his body
Like liquid lightning
He falls into a cloud
Knowing what is coming
Hoping they won’t show me
The pictures of him laying down
Vomit in his hair
Knowing the cops will speak words of reason
Hoping the cops won’t speak the word of treason
NHI just another overdose

With all the questions they ask
It never occurs to them to ask
Why he picked up the syringe
And with all the things that they see
They can’t see that he’s just a kid
Though NHI is never spoken aloud
Within the air it resides
Lingering in the back of everyone’s mind
Like mother like son
His world from the beginning was without sun

His mother died when he was two
She used her body like a money making tool
Like mother like son O.D.ing in the veins
Both searched for a high too hard to obtain
