Assign Me A number

Assign me a number
It’ll lessen the shame
Throw away my childhood
And play hot potato with the blame
Stick me with a family
But this place is not my home
You can tell me that you love me
But this family is not my own

Assign me a number
Maybe you’ll forget my face
Tell me who I am
Steal my religion from it’s grace
Force me into your church
I’ll tear you out of my heart
Throw me away like old news
Tear my life apart

Assign me a number
You’ll never get my love
Tell me I’m special
Yet keep me caged like your dove
Degrade my family
And make me feel like I don’t belong
Tell me I’m a number
‘Cause I won’t live that long
