My Worst Fear

It was a lonely, dreary day
The sky drooped in sorrow
The air was strangely icy
Though it was only mid May

The news played the story
The phones violently shaking
Each moment felt like eternity
The shock was still taking

Pictures lay on the table
Memories filled the room
So many words left unspoken
The bitter truth still hard to consume

Black and sadness was the theme
The day was chilled with dolor
Smeared mascara, heads held low
What was the reason they were mourning for

Next thing I know, I’m there in the room
The scenery changed to flowers and pews
Looking ahead I saw something that scared me
I walked towards the front, as I counted to three

I held my breath, I knew someone died
A casket lay open, a girl lay inside
She looked so familiar, her face reflected mine
I stepped back abruptly, shivers ran up my spine
I peered back again, yet only to see
The girl in that box was undoubtedly me
