The Last Moment

Her steps were soft and slow
He stood there
She moved with a certain confidence
He had never seen
She approached him
Standing in front of him
Her hand fell lightly on the side of his narrow torso
She leaned in
Taking in slowly every section of his body with her eyes
Then only focusing on his lips
Knowing that this would be their moment
The moment they said hello
And goodbye all in one
Her breasts pressed up against him lightly
Just enough so that they both could imagine
How it would feel flesh to flesh
Years of frustration and unsaid words
She would make disappear in one gesture
Her lips met his
Just resting there
He pushed back lightly
Letting her head rest softly in his one hand
And for that moment they were one
They saw it all
All the times that could have been
All the memories they didn’t have
All the nights embracing
All the fights ending in tears
Every one made up in that moment
Every one disappearing in that moment
She took her lips from his
A grin slowly graced her face
She skimmed her hands over his chest
And the smile was knowing
She knew that it was inevitable
They had to know what they really hadn’t missed
There was nothing hiding in the corners for them
No tilt of the universe
He looked into her eyes
For the first time she let him
She knew she was better off
He sensed that she had nothing left for him
He pulled her into his arms
He lifted her gently from her feet
He felt her heart against his
And in that he could smile
She would be alright
She whispered from the song in her head
“All I want in life’s a little bit of love to take the pain away”
Words fell from his lips before he could really hear her
“I could still fall in love with you”
She slowly pulled out of his embrace
Her eyes were glassy
And she smiled again
She stepped back
Out of his presence
Her hand fell into his
It was the first moment in all their years
Where they were comfortable with one another
The gaze didn’t last long
Before she broke it
He held her hand till the last possible moment
As she walked away
She turned her head just as she was falling out of sight
He still looked on at her
She left him with a haunting smile
That he would never understand
He waited until he could not see her anymore
Before walking on himself
Back to his life
As she approached her own
