The Waiting Room

I take a seat in the corner of the room
So I'm not out in the open for everyone
To stare at
Like an animal at the zoo.
We all gaze at each other
Trying to figure out what's wrong,
Turning it into a game to pass the time.
The tick of the clock,
Pounding heart beat,
A sniff,
Troubled breathing.
A woman rolls in
In a wheelchair.
We all watch as she has difficulty
And yet no one gets up to help
Because we're all so wrapped up in our own problems,
Pissed that we have to wait two hours to get help.
This isn't as funny as Scrubs.
Some people contemplate pretending to pass out
Because they know they'll get in faster but...
No one does.
We sit there in silence as Mad TV plays
On the TV above us.
Awkward.
No one wants to laugh
And the ones who do have nothing wrong with them.
Our names are called and we all get into a single file line
Of illness and we're herded into the back rooms
Where our fates await us.
