Goodnight

Somewhere the moon has settled
Into the cold night before me
But tonight
I see nothing
But false notions of what could be
& what could have been
Toxic images pass through the dark
& stick to the pavement
Like sidewalk chalk
The little cracks
That any other night
Would seem like insignificant specks
Against the canvas of the starry sky
Break open & swallow me whole
The simple hallucinations
That any other night
Could not exist outside the mind
Are the landscape that surrounds me
There is no comfort here
The bedroom walls have long since vanished
Turned to smoke
& left me here to face the cold
This night is made of ghost stories
With no fire light to scare away the monsters
This night is made of loneliness
With only sleep to be my savior
So goodnight world
& goodnight love
I'll miss you still when morning comes
But tonight
I'll wonder
& pray for sleep again
