He calls me Sunshine
But words from his lips are acid
Spit from an well gone dry years ago
He forgets how to smile
His lips part to show his teeth
To inflict fear
Like a dog
The dog that promised happiness
Only
If he could sleep at her feet
At the bottom of her bed
I stand in front of the stray
Smack its snout and whisper
"I fear you no more.
Shall I call the pound?
Shall you be put down?"
He calls me Sunshine.
