Death Becomes Her

A young girl stands on a far away hill,
Dressed in black, the land is eerily still.
As her love is lowered deep in the ground,
a deathly silence falls all around.
Chalky white face and vacant stare.
The realization nobody’s there.

Dried up, brown grass crunches beneath her tired feet,
as she heads for the long, black car waiting in the street.
A long drive back to reality.
Exiting the car with an air of finality.

She entered her home, eyes full of dread,
to find her starved goldfish already dead.
That was it, the final straw.
Everyone gone, she had no one at all.

She shivered as her feet touched the chilly ledge.
Nothing below except a lonely hedge.
She had so many questions for the beings she’d soon meet.
Closed her eyes, took the step, Her mission complete.
