The Dance

She watches everyone dance with one another
as they link their arms and hold each other

She remains still and stands by herself
she waits there too long then rests her head on the shelf

In a blue skirt she scans the room
the last slow dance will be coming soon

There is no boy without a girl’s waist on his hands
quieter and quieter is getting the band

All she wanted was just one dance where she could rest her hands on his
shoulders
when she was so close she could smell his cologne and she could call herself
bolder

The last dance’s music starts and a boy walks near the her
“Will you dance with me?” he asks her his knee skinning her skirt

She nods her head and walks out onto the floor
Never will she be alone standing alone no more
