I remember being five
And meeting you,
I remember all the things
I put you through.
And one thing I won’t forget,
Are the words I now regret.
“You’re not my daddy,
so don’t try to be.
You’re not my father
So don’t tell me,
Don’t tell me what to do,
I don’t have to listen to you.”
The days turned to years,
That seemed to last so long,
We began to have a relationship
But it wasn’t all that strong.
“You’re not my father,
don’t tell me what to do.
Where’s my mother?
I don’t have to listen to you.”
But as the years passed by
I couldn’t figure out why
I’d been so unkind.
You’re not my daddy,
please don’t ever be,
because he left,
he walked out on me.
You’re not my daddy,
Because he walked out the door,
You are my father,
And that means so much more.
I’m growing up,
I get older everyday,
And I’m so glad
It all turned out this way.
Sometime soon,
Not too far down the road,
I’ll end up getting married,
And I want you to know,
I want you to be there,
You have to be,
Down that aisle,
Please walk with me.
You’ve been there
when I needed you,
when life was rough,
we made it through.
We may not always
Get along,
But you’ll be there for me always
No matter what goes wrong.
So now I realize
You’re not all that bad,
Thanks for everything
I love you, Dad.
